System Administration-English

Overall objective: After attending this track, students will be able to install, upgrade, secure and competently manage the Unix operating system on standard PC hardware, and use it to provide essential Internet services on a network. It is aimed at students who are technically competent but may have had little or no prior exposure to the Unix environment.

Classroom Setup Notes

  • 1 PC per student.
  • FreeBSD does not need to be installed. We'll verify we have a functioning install mechanism before start of class. [current plan is to use the 25 HP's which are supposedly working out-of-the-box, not needing special kernel like the Dells - geertj]
  • 1 or 2 whiteboards with several pens.
  • Projector with spare bulb or projector in place. Project can do 1024x768.
  • Additional power available for laptops - ideally a few drops available for students at their tables as well as 1 or 2 tables in the classroom where instructors can sit and work while class is in session.
  • Table at the front of the classroom where instructor can place their laptop, sit, etc... In addition, this might be where the classroom NOC machine goes.
  • 1 additional PC available to be used as the classroom NOC.
  • 1 or 2 switches as needed available to the classroom.
  • Sound system with 1 or 2 additional microphones for students to use as well.
  • No speaking podium is necessary. This just takes up space and won't be used by us.
